About Iberia
Tickets / About the Airline
Iberia is Spain's largest airline and a full-service carrier with a rich heritage dating back to 1927. As the country's flagship carrier, Iberia operates an extensive network connecting Spain to Europe, North Africa, and beyond, with long-haul services to the United States, Mexico, and South America. The airline's primary hub is Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD), one of Europe's busiest aviation centers, with secondary bases in Barcelona and Málaga. Iberia is known for reliable service on both short-haul European routes and long-distance transatlantic flights.
The airline operates a modern fleet featuring widebody aircraft like the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Airbus A350 for long-haul routes, alongside narrowbody Airbus A320 family jets for European and regional services. As a full-service carrier, Iberia offers amenities across all cabin classes, in-flight meals on most routes, and baggage inclusions. The airline is part of the International Airlines Group (IAG) and participates in the oneworld alliance, providing passengers with access to partner airlines worldwide.
Check-in
Iberia offers flexible check-in options to suit your travel needs. Online check-in opens 24 hours before departure and is available through the airline's website or mobile app, allowing you to select seats and receive your boarding pass digitally. Mobile boarding passes are accepted on most flights, eliminating the need to print. For passengers preferring traditional service, airport check-in counters operate several hours before departure, with dedicated lanes for Business and frequent flyer members.
The Iberia mobile app provides a convenient way to manage your booking, check-in remotely, track flight status, and access your boarding pass. For flights departing from Madrid or Barcelona, travelers can also use self-service kiosks at the airport if needed. Boarding typically begins 40–60 minutes before departure, with priority boarding available for premium cabin passengers, frequent flyers, and families traveling with young children.
Seats
Seat selection policies vary depending on your fare type and cabin class. Passengers in premium cabins (Business and Preferred Economy) enjoy free seat selection, including preferred seating near the front or with extra legroom. Economy passengers on basic fares have limited free seat options, typically in the rear cabin or middle seats, while paid seat selection allows access to premium economy seats or extra-legroom rows. Families traveling with children under 12 are often permitted to sit together at no additional charge when booking.
For group bookings and families, Iberia makes efforts to accommodate seating together, though availability depends on flight load and fare type. Exit row and bulkhead seats carry additional fees and eligibility requirements. Seat maps are available during online check-in, allowing you to visualize cabin layouts and choose strategically based on your preferences and fare rules.
Fares & Baggage
Iberia offers several fare types designed to match different travel needs and budgets. Basic fares provide economical pricing with essential inclusions; Flexible fares add free changes and higher baggage allowances; and Flexible Plus fares extend benefits with priority boarding and seat selection. Business class provides premium amenities, lounge access, enhanced meals, and flat-bed seats on long-haul flights. Each tier includes varying baggage allowances and other perks.
Baggage allowances depend on your route and fare type. On short-haul European flights, economy passengers typically receive one checked bag (23 kg/50 lbs) with higher fares, while basic fares may allow carry-on only. Long-haul flights generally permit two checked bags for economy passengers. Carry-on allowance is usually one bag plus one personal item across all fares. Business class provides generous allowances with priority baggage handling. Additional baggage, sporting equipment, and oversized items incur extra fees. Always verify baggage details when booking, as rules vary by route and may be updated seasonally.
