About Vueling
Tickets / About the Airline
Vueling is a Spanish low-cost carrier founded in 2002 and based in Barcelona, where it operates its primary hub at Barcelona-El Prat Airport. The airline also maintains significant operations at other European bases, including Madrid and Rome, serving as a key regional hub for budget-conscious travelers across Southern Europe. Vueling operates a modern fleet composed almost exclusively of Airbus A320 family aircraft, including the A320, A320neo, and A321 variants, allowing the airline to maintain fuel efficiency and cost-effective operations on both short-haul and medium-haul routes.
As a major low-cost carrier, Vueling specializes in point-to-point routes connecting major European cities, with a strong presence on routes from Spain and Italy to the rest of Europe. The airline is particularly known for its extensive network within Spain, connections to the UK and France, and growing routes to Eastern European destinations. While primarily focused on leisure and budget travel, Vueling has established itself as a reliable option for both tourists and business travelers seeking affordable fares across the European continent.
Check-in
Vueling offers multiple check-in options to suit different passenger preferences. Online check-in is available through the airline's website or mobile app, opening 72 hours before departure and closing 24 hours before flight departure. This is the most convenient option for passengers traveling with carry-on baggage only, as it allows you to avoid airport queues and proceed directly to security. Passengers may also check in at the airport using self-service kiosks, which are available at most airports served by Vueling, or at traditional manned check-in counters if additional assistance is needed.
Mobile boarding passes are accepted on most Vueling flights, allowing you to present your boarding pass directly from your smartphone at the gate. However, printed boarding passes can also be obtained at airport kiosks or counters. For passengers checking baggage, airport check-in is necessary, though it can be completed at self-service machines in many locations. It is advisable to arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before international flights and 1.5 hours before domestic flights to allow sufficient time for check-in, security screening, and boarding procedures.
Seats
Vueling operates an open seating model on most of its flights, meaning passengers are not assigned specific seats during booking. Instead, seat selection is made during the online check-in process, which opens 72 hours before departure. Standard seat selection is free, allowing passengers to choose any available seat on a first-come, first-served basis at check-in. However, Vueling offers premium seat options such as extra-legroom seats, seats near the front of the cabin, and seats with guaranteed aisle access, which are available for an additional fee.
Families traveling with children are eligible for complimentary seat reservations to ensure they can sit together, with one child per adult typically seated adjacent. Passengers requiring assistance, including elderly travelers and those with reduced mobility, may also receive priority seating accommodations. Group bookings are available, and groups of 10 or more passengers can contact Vueling's group sales team to arrange seating preferences and potential discounts.
Fares & Baggage
Vueling offers several fare options to accommodate different travel needs. The Basic fare is the airline's most economical option, including a carry-on bag only (typically up to 7 kg), with a maximum of one small personal item like a laptop bag or small backpack. The Optimal fare tier includes a small checked bag (up to 23 kg) in addition to carry-on allowance, plus additional perks such as seat assignment and potential date change flexibility. The Premium fare provides maximum flexibility with two checked bags (up to 23 kg each), priority boarding, and enhanced baggage policies.
Additional baggage and services can be purchased separately or pre-booked during ticket purchase at a lower cost than purchasing at the airport. Vueling allows passengers to bring one carry-on bag (approximately 55 x 40 x 20 cm) and one additional personal item. Checked baggage fees vary based on fare type and timing of purchase, with early booking typically offering better rates. Passengers should note that the low-cost model means that services considered standard on full-service carriers—such as meals, beverages, and seat assignments—may require additional payment on Vueling flights, though the airline does offer food and drink purchases onboard at competitive prices.
