How to reach the centre of Tenerife
Tenerife has two main airports: Tenerife North (Los Rodeos) is approximately 15km from Santa Cruz, whilst Tenerife South (Reina Sofía) serves the southern resort areas and is about 60km from the capital. Most international flights arrive at Tenerife South.
The most economical option is the public bus network operated by TITSA, with regular services from both airports to Santa Cruz city centre taking 45 minutes to 90 minutes depending on which airport. Express bus services cost around €3–5, whilst shared shuttle transfers are €5–8 per person. Taxis are convenient but pricier, typically €20–30 from the north airport and €40–60 from the south, with fixed rates available. Car hire is readily available if you plan to explore the island independently.
What to see in Tenerife
Tenerife's most iconic attraction is Mount Teide, Spain's highest peak at 3,718 metres, located within the stunning Teide National Park. The surrounding landscape of volcanic rock formations and pine forests is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering spectacular hiking opportunities and breathtaking cable car views. Santa Cruz, the island's capital, features the striking Auditorio de Tenerife and a revitalised waterfront with museums, galleries, and excellent local restaurants.
The island offers diverse attractions across its neighbourhoods and districts: the charming colonial town of La Laguna with its historic architecture, the lush Anaga mountains ideal for hiking, the picturesque fishing village of Garachico with natural swimming pools, and Puerto de la Cruz in the north with its botanical gardens and vibrant atmosphere. For cultural experiences, visit the impressive Basilica de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, the island's spiritual heart.

Local cuisine in Tenerife
Canarian cuisine reflects the island's unique geography and cultural heritage. Papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes boiled in sea salt) are an iconic staple served with mojo—a vibrant sauce made from garlic, peppers, and local olive oil that accompanies almost every meal. Fresh seafood dominates the dining scene, with sancocho (a traditional fish stew) and grilled local catch featuring prominently on restaurant menus throughout the island.
Traditional Canarian dining culture emphasises fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and time-honoured recipes passed through generations. Gofio, a roasted grain flour, appears in both savoury and sweet dishes, whilst queso de flor (Canarian cheese) offers a creamy, distinctive flavour. Ropa vieja, shredded beef with peppers and tomatoes, is another beloved classic. Pair these dishes with local wines from volcanic vineyards or refreshing locally-brewed beer for an authentic Tenerife dining experience.
